🚀 This Week's Hacks: The odd one out gets the purchase 🤟
The best email of your week

Hey, Marketers! On October 11th, we’re hosting a dinner alongside Ruckus at Sveta in Manhattan for C-level executives, founders, and investors. So if you’re NYC-based or planning to come to town, join us as we break bread (and enjoy an open bar) with great people from the most exciting companies and influential investment funds out there.
What’s in the news…
Google updated its bulk email rules, Meta proposed a paid ad-free plan, and meanwhile Reddit isn’t letting users opt-out of ad personalization.
Growth Hacks
#1. Get 93% higher engagement on limited-time offers

Limited availability screams value in-store. But online, it can feel like a bait. Clarify the 'why' and watch your limited-time promos shine.
Improve your FOMO-driven offers by:
- Justifying the scarcity: Online shoppers are savvy. They don't just want a deal; they want to know why it's limited. For example, is it a 24-hour birthday special? A final clearance before introducing new items?
- Timing it right: Short but sweet works best. A Facebook ad with under a day left on a justified spring sale saw a 93% spike in engagement.
- Using relatable tie-ins: Link your sales to common themes. Selling fragrances? Capitalize on World Flowers Day. Pushing mattresses? Make the most of World Sleep Day.

#2: It pays to be the odd one out

German psychiatrist Hedwig Von Restorff made a discovery in 1933 that in a group of similar items, the distinct one gets remembered. It's aptly called "the Von Restorff Effect".
Here are 5 ways to use the Von Restorff Effect in marketing:
Design Distinction: Ensure the element you want to spotlight (be it a product, feature, ad, or price option) stands apart visually from its surroundings.
Physical Products: Be the Pringles tube amidst bags of chips. If you're launching a new brand of organic juices, consider a unique bottle shape or even a pouch. When someone is scanning the shelves, your product's unique packaging will make them pause and take a closer look.
Branding: Adopt a unique aesthetic that diverges from competitors. Think of Liquid Death's edgy aura.
Pricing Tiers: Highlight the package you want to sell most with distinct colors or graphics.
Comparative Marketing: Set your product in vibrant color while competitors are in grayscale to make it pop.
Bottom line: Don't blend in; make bold design choices. Stand out, be the memorable 'odd one out', and watch your metrics soar.

#3. Join the conversation
Get in on relevant conversations to boost brand presence and provide value - without the hassle of constant monitoring.
Here's how to do this on each platform:
Slack: Join target communities on Slack. Set up notifications for keywords tied to your product or service under Preferences. Engage when pinged!
Upwork: Track job descriptions using keywords echoing the problems your product resolves. Receive instant alerts for relevant jobs, then step in to offer your solution.
Twitter/X: Use bookmarked searches. Input “min_faves:200 [keyword]” or “min_retweets:200 [keyword]” to discover high-engagement tweets. Engage with top content related to your keyword.
LinkedIn: Navigate to My Network > Contacts > Add more Contacts on LinkedIn. Upload your current customer and email subscriber lists. Regularly engage by commenting on your customers' posts, ensuring your input is value-driven and contributes positively to the discussion.
